Meditative Taengwha - 2022

Flowers in the void
aka La Pause / 잠시 멈춤
Augmented taengwha painting

Sitting alone facing a painting which mysteriously comes alive through light effects,
we are invited on a motionless journey.

The flow of our thoughts gradually intertwines with the visual tale delivered by the painting.
When the dancing lights suddenly vanish, the painting is bare again...
yet it is somehow different. Our gaze has changed.

This hybrid installation mixes korean ancient art of taengwha and new media
to invite us to indulge in some self-healing.
After the experience, the audience is invited to taste local tea on the beach and enjoy a peaceful break.

Collaboration with: KIM Yuji
Premiere at: Yulpo beach blue library - Boseong, South Korea

This artwork was supported by the Jeollanam-do Cultural Foundation.
Taengwha is a traditional painting technique for korean buddhistic icons,
with highly codified aesthetics and processes.
As each pigment has to be ground by hand for hours before being applied immediately,
the method requires a peculiar mental attitude, combining discipline and appeasement.

Poems from Park Nohae

"We would like to invite you on a short journey in which each of us may,
just for a few minutes, let everything else aside.
Let aside our thoughts and worries about the outside world,
and offer ourselves some silence and space for contemplation.
"

"This healing ceremony is a time for contemplation,
through the beauty of painting, music, poetry, and digital arts.

So what can we do to heal those feelings, and find some
peacefulness of soul, clarity of mind and accuracy of actions?"
"Something that anybody can do any time.
Some care that anybody can decide to offer to themselves for a few minutes.
It is to take the time for a break and the space for a contemplation.

Maybe refrain from acting right now will provide us some strength
to act in the future in a more efficient way on the sources of our troubles."
